It took only a few sessions into the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne for the daggers to be drawn. By the end of the fourth Test in Adelaide a couple of weeks ago, the entire cricketing fraternity in India was baying for blood, with even the moderates calling for the retirement of the holy triumvirate: Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman.

From a country whose post-independence identity has been largely built around the unifying worship of cricket (thoughtful historians and sociologists know that any other explanation for an Indian identity is always a bit of a stretch), and from a people who had of late become used to its team actually winning matches, the reaction was not a surprise.

The Salafi movement in Yemen has been mostly apolitical since its founding in the early 1980s, but the 2011 uprising thrust the Salafi groups into politics and deeply transformed them. The importance of the Salafi movement now goes beyond issues of counterterrorism.

The German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority, BaFin (Bundesbank and German Federal Financial Supervisory Authority) sent two representatives on an Islamic finance congress. Dr. Johannes Engels, senior advisor and Robert Elsen, deputy head of the section for technical co-operation, both contributed to the World Islamic Finance Conference held this year in London, March 28/29. The conference featured such prominent figures of the Islamic finance world as Sheikh Nizam Yaquby, Shari'ah scholar from Bahrain who is a member of more than 80 Shari'ah-boards advising Islamic financial institutions and is considered to be one of the top ten leading Shari'ah-scholars in the world. The conference is not the first effort undertaken by the BaFin to jump start Islamic Banking in Germany.

ഇടശേരിയുടെ ആഹ്വാനമാണ്. ആ കാലഘട്ടത്തില്‍ ഇൌ മനോഭാവം കവിതയ്ക്കു പുതുമയായിരുന്നു. വികാര വിക്ഷോഭങ്ങളും അമിതവര്‍ണനയും നിറഞ്ഞ കവിതകളുടെ പതിവു സ്വഭാവത്തിന് കാതലായ മാറ്റം വരുത്തിയ ഇടശേരി ശക്തിയുടെ ആവശ്യകത ബോധ്യപ്പെടുത്തി. പൂതം തട്ടിയെടുത്ത ഉണ്ണിയെ തിരിച്ചു കിട്ടാന്‍ അമ്മ നടത്തുന്ന പോരാട്ടം നിങ്ങള്‍ക്കു വളരെ പരിചിതമാണല്ലോ. അമ്മയുടെ സ്നേഹവും കരുത്തും കൂടിച്ചേര്‍ന്നപ്പോഴാണ് കാലത്തെ അതിജീവിക്കുന്ന 'പൂതപ്പാട്ട്' എന്ന ആ കവിത ലഭിച്ചത്.

മലയാള സാഹിത്യത്തിലെ പ്രമുഖ കവികളില്‍ ഒരാളാണ് ഇടശേരി എന്ന ചുരുക്കപ്പേരില്‍ അറിയപ്പെടുന്ന ഇടശേരി ഗോവിന്ദന്‍നായര്‍ (ഇടശേരി എന്നതു വീട്ടുപേരാണ്). അദ്ദേഹം 'ശക്തിയുടെ കവി'യായി വിശേഷിപ്പിക്കപ്പെടുന്നു. ജീവിതത്തിലെ പ്രയാസങ്ങളെ ശക്തിയോടുകൂടി നേരിട്ടാലേ അവയെ അതിജീവിക്കാനാകൂ എന്നാണ് അദ്ദേഹം കവിതയിലൂടെ പ്രചരിപ്പിച്ചതും ജീവിതത്തിലൂടെ തെളിയിച്ചതും. ഒരിക്കലും വേദനകളുടെ മുന്നില്‍ അദ്ദേഹം പകച്ചു നിന്നിട്ടില്ല.  

പൂതപ്പാട്ട്, കാവിലെ പാട്ട്, പുത്തന്‍കലവും അരിവാളും, ബുദ്ധനും ഞാനും നരിയും, അമ്പാടിയിലേക്ക് വീണ്ടും, വിവാഹ സമ്മാനം, നെല്ലുകുത്തുകാരി പാറുവിന്റെ കഥ തുടങ്ങി ഒട്ടേറെ കവിതകള്‍ ആസ്വാദകരെ ആഴത്തില്‍ സ്വാധീനിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. പ്രത്യേകതയുള്ള സന്ദര്‍ഭങ്ങള്‍ സൃഷ്ടിക്കുക, പിന്നീട് സന്ദര്‍ഭാനുസാരിയായ പദങ്ങളിലൂടെ കവിതയ്ക്കു ജീവന്‍ നല്‍കുക, ഉചിതമായ ഇൌണം കണ്ടെത്തുക തുടങ്ങിയ ഘടകങ്ങളിലൂടെയാണ് ഒരു കവി തന്റെ ആശയത്തെ വായനക്കാരനിലേക്ക് എത്തിക്കുന്നത്. ഇടശേരിക്കവിതകള്‍ പരിചയപ്പെടുന്നവര്‍ക്കു വളരെ എളുപ്പത്തില്‍ ഇക്കാര്യം ബോധ്യപ്പെടും.

ഗ്രാമത്തിന്റെ വിശുദ്ധി ഇടശ്ശേരിയുടെ കവിതകളിലും കഥാപാത്രങ്ങളിലും കാണാം. കൃഷി, തൊഴില്‍, ദേശീയബോധം, സഹോദരീ സഹോദര ബന്ധം, മാതൃപുത്ര ബന്ധം, കാമുകീ കാമുക ബന്ധം, കടന്നുകയറുന്ന നഗര സംസ്കാരം, മതനിരപേക്ഷത തുടങ്ങി ഒട്ടേറെ ഘടകങ്ങള്‍ ഇടശേരിക്കവിതകളില്‍നിന്നു വേര്‍തിരിച്ചെടുക്കാം. കവിതകള്‍ മാത്രമല്ല ഇടശേരിയുടേതായിട്ടുള്ളത്. അതീവ സുന്ദരമായ നാടകങ്ങളും അദ്ദേഹം എഴുതിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. കൂട്ടുകൃഷി, ഞെടിയില്‍ പടരാത്ത മുല്ല, നൂലാമാല എന്നിവ അതില്‍ പ്രധാനപ്പെട്ടവയാണ്.

കാര്‍ഷിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും സാമുദായിക പ്രശ്നങ്ങളും പരിഹരിക്കാന്‍ കൃഷിയിലും മതബന്ധങ്ങളിലും ഉണ്ടാവേണ്ട ശരിയായ കൂടിച്ചേരലിന്റെ ആവശ്യകത അദ്ദേഹം വര്‍ഷങ്ങള്‍ക്കു മുന്‍പു തന്നെ മനസ്സിലാക്കിയിരുന്നു. അതിന്റെ ഉദാഹരണമാണ് കൂട്ടുകൃഷി എന്ന നാടകം. ഞാറു നടുന്ന സത്രീകള്‍ പാടുന്ന ഞാറ്റു പാട്ടിന്റെ ഇൌരടികളില്‍ പോലും നാടിന്റെ സ്മരണയുണ്ട്.

കുടുംബ ബന്ധങ്ങളുടെ മനോഹരമായ ആവിഷ്കരണമാണ് 'ഞെടിയില്‍ പടരാത്ത മുല്ല' എന്ന നാടകം.
