Top 10 Must-See Occupy Wall Street Videos

Top 10 Must-See Occupy Wall Street Videos [Slideshow]
Since the very beginning of the Occupy Wall Street, many supporters have been appalled by the lack of attention paid to it by the mainstream media. Some news outlets have belittled OWS participants for exercising their right to free speech, and made excuses for those who have used violence against peaceful protesters.
Police departments around the country have reciprocated by hindering journalist access to OWS encampments, and arresting or even harming reporters trying to document evictions.
There was a time when these tactics might have actually undermined the movement. But not today.
Thanks to mobile devices and high speed internet, every single person that attends or participates is a journalist. Phones and cameras record rallies, marches, speeches, arrests, and attacks, and publish them on the internet within moments. Some have even video taped their own arrests and tweeted about conditions from inside police vans.
We no longer need to depend on the mainstream media to know what’s really going on. The revolution might not be televised, but you can still watch it happen.

On the following are the 10 Occupy Wall Street videos that rocked the internet and energized the movement.

One Billion Cars Now on World’s Roads

One Billion Cars Now on World’s Roads

One Billion Cars Now on World’s Roads

Driven by demand from countries like China, India and Brazil, the global market for automobiles is accelerating faster than ever. According to an analysis from the auto trade journal Ward’s, there are now over one billion cars, light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks on roads around the world, up from 980 million at the end of 2009.
In just half a year, the global auto fleet expanded by around 35 million vehicles. That’s the second-biggest increase ever.
The U.S. is still has the biggest population of cars and trucks – one for every 1.3 people in the country. But the American fleet is not growing much, only about 1% a year. The explosion in automobile deployments is coming from China, where registrations grew by 27.5%, bringing the country’s vehicle population to 78 million. That increase was more than half of the total global expansion, according to Ward’s.
The leap in registrations gave China the world’s second-largest vehicle population, pushing it ahead of Japan, with 73.9 million units, for the first time.
India’s vehicle population underwent the second-largest growth rate, up 8.9% to 20.8 million units, compared with 19.1 million in 2009.
Brazil experienced the second largest volume increase after China, with 2.5 million additional vehicle registrations in 2010.
China put 16.8 million vehicles on the road in 2010. Industry analysts were forecasting another 15% jump in sales in 2011, but the market slumped after the government stopped providing subsidies for car buyers in order to temper the market. Even so, China’s vehicle population could surpass America’s in just a few years.
According to the International Transport Forum, the global vehicle fleet could reach 2.5 billion by 2050. No doubt that those cars and trucks will be much more efficient than today’s vehicles, especially with China and America setting tighter fuel standards.  And many of them will be electric-drive vehicles.  But another doubling of the global market — even with an increase in efficiency — means massive increases in greenhouse gas emissions.
Auto industry executives everywhere are giddy with joy; meanwhile, those concerned about climate change wonder if we have the wisdom to take our foot off the fossil-fuel accelerator

5 Things About Breast Cancer You Should Take to Heart

5 Things About Breast Cancer You Should Take to Heart

5 Things About Breast Cancer You Should Take to Heart
As a triple-negative breast cancer survivor, there’s a lot I could tell you about the process. In fact, this is my 20th blog post on the topic. But the most important things I want you to take away from this series are really quite simple. I hope you take them to heart.

1. Touch yourself. Be familiar with your breasts. Get to know them like the back of your hand. Like the majority of breast cancer patients I’ve met or spoken to in this past year, I’m the one who discovered my breast lump.
2. Take breast lumps seriously. If you find a lump in your breast, don’t give in to the temptation to dismiss it. Breast cancer can happen to you. Even if you never smoked. Even if you eat right. Even if you think you’re making all the right choices. Even if there’s never been a case of cancer in your family. Even if …
3. Call the doctor. Don’t waste precious time. Sure, you’re busy, but that’s a terrible reason to die. Ignorance is not bliss. If it turns out to be a false alarm, then whew! Now treat yourself to something special for your troubles. If it turns out to be cancer, early treatment may greatly increase your chances of long-term survival.
4. Cancer treatment is a bitch. So is premature death. Remember what’s at stake for you and your loved ones. You’re tougher than you think. Be an active patient. Learn all you can, question doctors, and make informed decisions based on fact, not fear.
5. Never stop living. No matter how bad you feel. No matter if you’re bald as a newborn baby and people look at you funny or if food has lost its allure or if you’ve lost weight and your clothes hang funny or if you’re missing a breast or two and your prosthesis is the wrong size or whatever else is out of whack. You have no idea how long you’ll be here — just like every other human being on the planet, whether they realize it or not. As long as you’re alive … live.

5 Tips to Save Money during Work Day

5 Tips to Save Money during Work Day

The importance of saving money evolves when we start working. For a majority of people the whole point of going to work is to earn money. But reflect on the work related expense. This would add up the coffees, snacks, lunches, transportation and clothes. You would be surprised when you notice that a significant chunk of your earnings is diverted to covering personal work expenses. That means that a portion of your work-day is dedicated to paying for the 'privilege' to work.

It would rather be more befitting if you cut on your daily expenses and save that money and retire early. Look at ways to keep your spending under control.

Cut on Commute
5 Tips to Save Money during Work Day

Save on petrol, parking and car maintenance by using a public transport. It's not only cheap but also better for environment. If you find it difficult to reach office by public transport then opt for car pooling. Find co-workers that you can carpool with. The ability to use the carpool lane (if available) may also save you time. This will cut you fuel expenses drastically.

Pack your Lunch

Is Technology Necessary For Learning?

Is Technology Necessary For Learning?

It’s hard to find a classroom today without some form of technology. But does investing in technology pay off in terms of test scores? Does outfitting every student with a laptop or iPad necessarily mean they are learning better?
Is Technology Necessary For Learning? The New York Times takes a close look at the the Kyrene School District in Chandler, Arizona. After a ballot initiative was passed in 2005, the Kyrene School District has spent roughly $33 million on technology. Its classrooms are outfitted with laptops, Smart Boards (like that in the photo above) and software to drill students on basic subjects. Teachers are supposed to be guides rather than lecturers to students who work at their own pace by using the resources of the Internet.
For its efforts, the Kyrene School District was pronounced a model of success by the National School Boards Association, which orchestrated a visit of 100 educators from 17 states to see Kyrene’s innovations in 2008.
But since 2005, Kyrene students’ scores in reading and math have “stagnated,” while scores for the rest of the state have risen.
Pretty Weak” Evidence
Tom Vander Ark, the former executive director for education at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, acknowledges that data for the educational value of extensive investments in technology is “pretty weak.” As the New York Times says, there simply isn’t much research showing that technology-centric teaching improves student learning.
Many studies have found that technology has helped individual classrooms, schools or districts. For instance, researchers found that writing scores improved for eighth-graders in Maine after they were all issued laptops in 2002. The same researchers, from the University of Southern Maine, found that math performance picked up among seventh- and eighth-graders after teachers in the state were trained in using the laptops to teach.
Bryan Goodwin, spokesman for Mid-continent Research for Education and Learning, makes the point that “rather than being a cure-all or silver bullet, one-to-one laptop programs may simply amplify what’s already occurring — for better or worse.” Teachers who know what they’re doing will make good use of the technology while teachers who don’t will not.
review by the Education Department in 2009 of research on online courses — which more than one million K-12 students are taking — found that few rigorous studies had been done and that policy makers “lack scientific evidence” of their effectivenessA division of the Education Department that rates classroom curriculums has found that much educational software is not an improvement over textbooks.
Larry Cuban, an education professor emeritus at Stanford University, said the research did not justify big investments by districts.
“There is insufficient evidence to spend that kind of money. Period, period, period,” he said. “There is no body of evidence that shows a trend line.”
Just having a computer in a classroom is no guarantee of successful student learning and can even simply promote student distraction

Can Exercise Treat Depression?

Can Exercise Treat Depression?

Can Exercise Treat Depression?A new study involving 126 participants who still suffered from depression after treatment with antidepressants (SSRIs) has found that exercise — even 30 minutes of regular walking — can help. Dr. Madhukar H. Trivedi, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, decided to study the possibility of prescribing exercise as a treatment for depression after patients reported feeling better after taking a stroll, says the New York Times.
Patients who do not respond to an antidepressant are often prescribed another medication (lithium or an anti-psychotic) but these can be expensive and come with side effects including weight gain. Exercise, as Dr. Trivedi notes, has “nonexistent” side effects and improves cardiovascular health and other benefits — and, especially if you just go out the door for a walk, it’s cheap.
The volunteers were divided into two groups, with one assigned “gentler” exercise (walking at a 3 miles per hour pace for about 10 minutes or the cycling equivalent) or a more intense regimen (walking at a 4 miles per hour pace for about 30 minutes or the cycling equivalent). The latter exercise regime is actually currently recommended by theAmerican College of Sports Medicine.
29.5 percent of participants who stuck to the 30-minute exercise regimen for four months (while still taking an antidepressant) achieved remission; that’s almost a third of the participants. Dr. Trivedi has published his results in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry.
There are some caveats:
One is practical. More patients improved in the group that completed the longer, brisker workouts than in the group assigned the easier exercise, but more of them also dropped out of the study. “We need to find ways to support people’s efforts to exercise,” Dr. Trivedi said. “It’s not going to be enough to casually say, ‘Go for a walk.’” Exercise, if it’s to be medicinal in depression treatments, will have to be monitored, he said, so it can’t be shrugged off.
Even then, many people will not respond. Almost 70 percent of the volunteers in this study did not achieve full remission. Failure rates were particularly high for women with a family history of depression, perhaps as a result of some as yet unknown genetic quirk. And women in that group who did recover were more likely to succeed using the lighter exercise program than the more strenuous routine.
But exercise as a treatment seems a potential win-win option. I’ve had some mild depression and just getting up and doing something helps. Others near and dear to me who’ve coped with unyielding depression have found that there’s nothing like a good long bike ride or run to get your mind away (albeit temporarily) from its woes. Plus, after that ride or run, you feel at least a bit of a “boost” from having accomplished something. Certainly the price of this treatment is right — and it’s heartening to know that there can be ways to treat depression that don’t call for taking little blue pills

Interview Preparation Wins Candidate Competitions

Interview Preparation Wins Candidate Competitions

When it's time to interview, you'll need more than attitude; do your homework to put yourself ahead of the pack.

The "will to win" is overrated. If you think about it, who doesn't have the will to win? What makes people successful — whether in sports competitions or job interviews — is what basketball Coach Bob Knight called "the will to prepare to win."
"That's what sets people apart," said Lisa Panarello, founder and CEO of Careers Advance, a professional training and coaching agency in New York.
She said applicants should put in at least 15 minutes of research just to compose an effective cover letter.
"That basic homework, it makes you look interested and really engaged in the process, but it also makes you more confident in the interview," said Kay Piatt, employment manager of The Houstonian Hotel, Club & Spa in Houston. "It's good for both parties."
Piatt has conducted many interviews as the head of employment and recruiting for the luxury hotel, and she knows when a candidate is prepared and when they're not.
But just doing the obvious research isn't enough at the $100K-plus level.
Piatt said job seekers should be well versed in how a company is structured, industry trends that are relevant to the position they're seeking and any current events involving the company. You might even want to study up on the person who will be interviewing you, she added.
According to Piatt, a lot of the basic information you'll need for preparation can be found online or — better yet — from someone you know who may work there.
Mark Grimm, a public speaking trainer and author of "Everyone Can Be a Dynamic Speaker," stresses offering your interviewer value — and that entails doing the homework necessary to know what it is she's looking for.
"Go to their Web site," Grimm said. "There's no excuse for not doing research now."
He suggested calling the office, chatting up the secretary and fishing out as much information as you can.
"What do you have to lose?" he said. "Find out as much as you can about what they really want."
When it comes to online research, sometimes cyberspace can become overwhelming: There's just too much information to process.
Not a problem, Panarello said: "Narrow it down to what is most relevant for the position at hand and the growth of the company. Peg it to the future."
Be methodical and efficient, she said. "Google one or two key people from the company, and print out the articles," she said. "Read an article. Try to come up with three questions. Then try to answer it."
This strategy, she said, will help focus you for the interview. And once you've done the research, bring physical evidence of your work to the interview.
"Treat an interview as if it's a business meeting. Bring the printouts in a folder," Panarello advised. "Pull out the article and reference it. They're going to think, 'This person is going to come to a meeting like this.' "
Next, take your homework to the next level, Panarello said, and do the same research about the company's competitors.
"When somebody is sitting across my desk, it is really interesting to talk about (competitors) rather than my list of 10 questions," Piatt said.
When a candidate can demonstrate a full understanding of the company's competitive needs, Grimm said, that person is in the best position to make a convincing case.
"The more you talk about how you help [the company] — rather than help yourself — the better their hearing gets," Grimm said.
